"The Annunciation"
by Fra Angelico (1395-1455)
My soul magnifies the Lord,
and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,
for he had looked on the humble estate of his servant.
For behold, from now on all generations will call me blessed;
for he who is mighty has done great things for me,
And his mercy is for those who fear him
from generation to generation.
He has shown strength with his arm;
he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts;
he has brought down the mighty from their thrones
and exalted those of humble estate;
he has filled the hungry with good things,
and the rich he has sent away empty.
He has helped his servant Israel,
in remembrance of his mercy,
as he spoke to our fathers,
to Abraham and to his offspring forever.
Luke 1:46b-55

Those pictures made me happy. Thanks for posting, Miss Pickwickian!
ReplyDeleteNo, I don't know of any other versions of the Annunciation, sorry :P
Merry Christmas, dearie!
I like the Waterhouse one, because it shows Mary in the middle of spinning, just an everyday, ordinary task.
ReplyDeleteBut my favorite is the Tanner. It conveys so much with it's limited palette and the use of light. I love Mary's pose and expression. She looks like she can hardly believe what's being told her, a little frightened, but ready to accept and obey what God has called her to do.
Thanks for sharing these!

I love them all. But the putti is a little disturbing. :)
ReplyDeleteThat last one looks like Brenda Wismer!
